Choosing the Right Mattress for a Healthier Back

Q: My wife wakes up with stiffness in her back. I wonder if our mattress is causing the problem. How do we determine if we need a new mattress?

A: That’s a thoughtful question, and you’re absolutely right to consider the mattress. After all, we spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping, and the quality of that sleep can affect how we feel every day—especially when it comes to back pain or stiffness.

As a general rule, if your mattress and box spring are over ten years old, it may be time to start thinking about a replacement. But there are also a few simple signs you can look for right now to help you decide:

Does the mattress or box spring look uneven?

Are there sagging spots along the edges or dips where you usually sleep?

Do you find that only certain areas feel comfortable?

Do you or your wife wake up with a sore or aching back?

If you answered yes to any of those, your mattress might be part of the problem.

When it comes time to shop for a new one, here are some tips to help you find the right fit:

A medium to firm mattress is often best. It gives your back the support it needs without being too hard or uncomfortable.

If a firm mattress feels too stiff, look for one with a soft pillow top. That extra cushioning can make all the difference without sacrificing support.

Don’t just sit on the edge when testing mattresses—lie down and stay there for a few minutes to really get a feel for how your body responds.

Always replace both the mattress and the box spring together. They work as a team, and putting a new mattress on an old foundation might not give you the results you're hoping for.

And don’t forget about sleep positions. Even the best mattress won’t help if your sleeping posture is off. Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow tucked under your knees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, and steer clear of thick pillows that push your head too far forward—they can strain your neck and shoulders.

Taking the time to find the right mattress and improve your sleep habits is a beautiful way to take care of yourself and your loved ones. Here’s to more restful nights and better mornings.
