FAQ

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Evidence, Risks, and Benefits Explained

Q: Is chiropractic care safe?

A: Yes. Chiropractic care is widely considered a safe, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment option for many neuromuscular conditions, particularly neck pain, back pain, and joint dysfunction. When performed by a properly trained and licensed chiropractor, spinal manipulation and related therapies have a low risk of serious complications.

Research indicates that serious adverse events following spinal manipulation are very rare, with estimates ranging from about 1 in 10,000 patients to far less frequent depending on the study design.

A large prospective survey examining over 50,000 cervical spine manipulations reported no serious adverse events, concluding that the risk of serious complications from chiropractic adjustments is “low to very low.”

Like most healthcare treatments, mild side effects can occur. Some patients experience temporary soreness, stiffness, or fatigue after an adjustment, but these symptoms usually resolve within 24–48 hours.

It is important to note that no healthcare treatment is completely risk-free, but chiropractic care is generally considered a safe conservative treatment when delivered by trained professionals who properly evaluate patients and screen for risk factors.
