    Technique names and description:

    • Activator Methods
A system of analysis and adjusting using a handheld instrument delivering a gentle, targeted correction—quick and precise with no twisting.

    • Logan Basic
Uses light pressure to release spinal tension, especially in the lower back and pelvis.

    • Palmer Package
A versatile group of techniques tailored to your body and comfort level.

    • Thompson Drop Table
Adjustments are made using a special table that gently drops to assist spinal alignment without force.

    • Torque Release Technique (TRT)
A neurologically-based technique to evaluate and adjust spinal subluxations- derived from a combination of five low force chiropractic techniques. TRT involves a specialized high velocity tool to restore nerve balance and support natural healing.

    • Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT)
Focuses on gentle adjustments between the pelvis and skull using soft pressure and support block-wedges.

    • Webster Technique
Specially designed for pregnancy, this gentle method balances the pelvis and reduces muscle and ligament tension, supporting both mom and baby through every stage.

  • Is chiropractic care safe?

Yes. Chiropractic care is widely considered a safe, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment option for many neuromuscular conditions, particularly neck pain, back pain, and joint dysfunction. When performed by a properly trained and licensed chiropractor, spinal manipulation and related therapies have a low risk of serious complications.

Licensed chiropractors are trained to prioritize patient safety by:

    • Performing thorough health evaluations before treatment

    • Identifying contraindications (conditions where adjustments may not be appropriate)

    • Using appropriate techniques based on age, condition, and comfort level

    • Referring patients to other healthcare providers when necessary

  • Yes, chiropractic care is generally considered safe during pregnancy when performed by a licensed chiropractor trained in prenatal care. Many pregnant women seek chiropractic treatment to relieve common discomforts and support a healthier pregnancy.

Chiropractors trained in prenatal care use modified, gentle techniques to ensure safety and comfort, including:

    • Specialized pregnancy tables that avoid pressure on the abdomen

    • Low-force adjustments tailored to each stage of pregnancy

    • Positioning that supports both mother and baby

Some providers are trained in the Webster Technique, which focuses on pelvic balance during pregnancy.

  • Many pregnant women seek chiropractic care to help manage musculoskeletal discomfort, improve mobility, and support overall well-being during pregnancy. Common reasons include:

    • Reduction of back pain: Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve joint and muscle stress.

    • Pelvic alignment and stability: Hormonal changes loosen ligaments, which can lead to pelvic imbalance. Chiropractic care aims to restore proper pelvic alignment, which may reduce discomfort and support optimal fetal positioning.

    • Decreased hip, sacroiliac, and pubic symphysis pain

    • Chiropractic care offers a conservative option for pain relief without drugs.

    • Preparation for labor: Specific techniques, such as the Webster technique, are used to balance the pelvis and reduce intrauterine constraint.

  • Chiropractors do not always use the same methods for pregnant moms. Pregnancy requires modifications to ensure safety and comfort for both the mother and the developing baby. Key differences include:

    • Positioning: Pregnant patients are often treated lying on their side or seated rather than face down. Special wedge pillows or pregnancy tables with cutouts may be used to accommodate the abdomen.

    • Techniques: Gentle, low-force techniques are preferred. Many chiropractors use the Webster Technique (a specific pelvic alignment method) and other soft-tissue, mobilization, or low-amplitude, low-velocity adjustments rather than high-velocity manipulations.

    • Instrument-assisted adjustments: Handheld spring-loaded instruments (e.g., Activator, Torque Release, SOT, Logan Basic) are commonly used because they provide controlled, gentle forces.

    • Focus areas: Care often emphasizes the pelvis, sacrum, and lower back to reduce pubic symphysis pain, pelvic floor tension, sciatica, and to support optimal fetal positioning.

    • Safety screening: Chiropractors take extra precautions—reviewing medical history, pregnancy trimester, any complications (placenta previa, preeclampsia, high-risk pregnancy), and coordinating with the patient’s obstetric provider when necessary.

    • Frequency and goals: Treatment plans may be adapted to address pregnancy-related complaints (nausea-related musculoskeletal strain, low back pain, pelvic girdle pain) and to prepare the body for labor.

  • A chiropractor with prenatal training offers safer, gentler, and more targeted care during pregnancy, helping relieve pain, improve pelvic alignment, and support a smoother pregnancy experience. These providers understand the unique physical and hormonal changes that occur and tailor care specifically for expecting mothers.

Prenatal-trained chiropractors understand how pregnancy affects the spine, pelvis, and ligaments. This allows them to:

    • Adapt techniques for each trimester

    • Avoid unnecessary pressure on sensitive areas

    • Provide care that evolves with your body

These chiropractors use modified, low-force approaches designed for comfort and safety, including:

    • Adjustments that reduce strain on the abdomen

    • Supportive positioning for mother and baby

    • Use of specialized equipment for pregnancy care

Some may be trained in the Webster Technique, which focuses on improving pelvic balance during pregnancy.

A prenatal-trained chiropractor can safely address:

    • Lower back pain

    • Sciatica

    • Hip and pelvic pain

    • Round ligament discomfort

  • A vertebral subluxation is a misalignment or restricted movement in the spine that can interfere with nerve function and cause pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility.

Subluxations can develop from everyday stressors, including:

    • Poor posture (sitting, screen time, driving)

    • Repetitive movements or overuse

    • Injuries (sports, auto accidents, falls)

    • Physical stress during pregnancy

    • Emotional stress and muscle tension

A vertebral subluxation may contribute to:

    • Back or neck pain

    • Stiffness or reduced range of motion

    • Headaches

    • Muscle tightness or spasms

    • General discomfort or imbalance

Chiropractors are trained to identify and correct vertebral subluxations through:

    • Spinal adjustments to restore proper movement

    • Improving joint function and alignment

    • Reducing nerve irritation

    • Supporting the body’s natural ability to heal

  • Maintaining proper pelvic alignment may help create a more balanced and supportive environment for the developing baby. When the pelvis and surrounding muscles are balanced:

    • There may be more optimal space in the uterus for the baby to move and grow.

    • Reduced pelvic tension may allow the baby to move into a more favorable head-down position for birth.

    • Improved maternal comfort may help support healthier pregnancy activity levels.

Dr. Joyce Battaglia is certified in the Webster Technique, which focuses on balancing the pelvis and surrounding ligaments during pregnancy.
