Spring Training: Getting Your Body Ready with Care

Before jumping into any kind of exercise, take a moment to warm up to get your joints moving and circulation to your muscles. It’s one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and it can help you feel so much better afterward too. A lot of the stiffness or soreness people feel after being active can be avoided with just a few thoughtful movements before and after strenuous activity.

Start by gently warming up your muscles. A short walk or a few minutes on a stationary bike is all it takes before jumping in to gardening, cleaning or a workout.  The best time to perform slow sustained stretches is after you've completed your intense activity. Hold each stretch for about 15 seconds, breathing deeply, and avoid bouncing. You should feel a gentle pull, not pain. If you experience a sharp sensation, that’s your body asking you to back off a little. Being gentle and gradual is key to avoiding injury.
