Can Back Problems Be Inherited?

Q: My father and brother both struggle with chronic back pain. Does that mean I’m more likely to have back problems too?

A: That’s a thoughtful question, and the short answer is yes, there can be a connection—but it’s not the whole story, and it certainly doesn’t mean you’re destined for the same outcome.

We inherit all sorts of things from our families—eye color, the shape of our nose, how we carry ourselves, even the way we walk or stand. Sometimes, this also includes certain physical tendencies like postural habits or weaknesses in the spine’s structure.

It’s not uncommon for chiropractors to look at spinal x-rays from family members and notice how similar they are. Some people inherit spinal irregularities or instabilities that can increase the risk of developing back problems over time. But knowing this actually puts you in a powerful position.

Just because you might have inherited a particular spinal structure doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to experience pain or problems. Being aware of your family history gives you the opportunity to be proactive about your spinal health.

That’s where chiropractic care can really help. A chiropractor can gently evaluate how your spine is moving and functioning, and if they find any misalignments or early signs of stress, they can make corrections before symptoms start. Regular care and a healthy lifestyle can make a big difference in how your body feels and functions—no matter what your genetic blueprint looks like.

So while heredity may play a role, it doesn’t get to write your whole story. With the right support and early attention, you can take charge of your back health and feel confident in your future.
