Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) in Pregnancy: Understanding the Urge to Move

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) affects up to 26% of pregnant women and is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, especially at night, often accompanied by tingling or crawling sensations.

Potential causes:

  • Hormonal shifts, particularly increased estrogen

  • Iron deficiency or low dopamine levels in the brain

  • Genetic predisposition

Relief and prevention:

  • Whole food iron supplements if iron levels are low and possibly other whole food supplements such as Magnesium/calcium, B vitamins or polyunsaturated fatty acids  (speak with your healthcare provider)

  • Moderate daily exercise and regular sleep schedules

  • Avoid caffeine, especially in the evening

  • Chiropractic care may support nervous system function, which could help regulate symptoms
