Pilates or Yoga for back pain
/Gentle Movement for a Healthy Back: Pilates or Yoga?
Q: A couple of years ago, I went through chiropractic care for lower back pain, and it helped so much. My chiropractor also gave me some stretches to stay flexible. Do you think Pilates or yoga would be a good addition to my routine?
A: Yes, both Pilates and yoga can be wonderful ways to care for your back and keep your body feeling strong, supple, and supported.
Pilates, originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, focuses on slow, controlled movements that strengthen your core and enhance flexibility all without putting extra strain on your joints. Much like yoga, it invites you to connect your breath and your body, encouraging strength, balance, and mindfulness.
I often recommend Pilates and/or yoga for patients who are recovering from back discomfort or simply want to keep their spines healthy. Both practices gently support posture, improve muscle tone, and release tension. But here’s the most important part: listen closely to your body. Always begin at the beginner level and don’t be afraid to make adjustments if something doesn’t feel quite right. You should feel supported and nourished by your movement not strained.
If you’re trying Pilates or yoga for the first time, I suggest taking an in-person class with a qualified instructor. A knowledgeable teacher can guide you in proper form and offer personalized modifications that make your practice safer and more effective for your unique needs. As you grow more confident and in tune with your body, you may feel comfortable transitioning to a home practice with the help of a trusted video.
Remember, the goal is never perfection it’s connection. Movement should be a gift you give yourself, not a demand you place on your body. If you ever feel unsure about a movement or exercise, I'm here to support you with guidance tailored to your health and healing journey.
Here’s to your well-being one mindful breath and gentle stretch at a time.
