Role Healthy Spine plays in Overall Health

Q: I understand how regular visits to a chiropractor can keep the spine in good shape but how can it help keep the rest of the body healthy like so many chiropractors claim it will?

A: The value of maintaining a healthy spine through chiropractic care should be put into perspective regarding the role it plays in contributing to overall health. Maintaining a healthy spine is one of many factors that determine the wellbeing of the entire body.

Make no mistake, chiropractic care is not a substitute for healthy habits such as proper diet and regular exercise. Nor does it compensate for self-destructive lifestyle choices such as smoking and living a couch potato existence.

Among other things, a person’s quality of health depends on proper communication between the brain and the rest of the body. The spine is the vital link between the two, so it stands to reason that good health relies in part on the integrity of the spine.

Messages or “instructions” being sent to and from the brain can become “jumbled” or misread when the spine is in poor alignment, causing less than optimal health. Consider the chaos that would ensue if the lines of communication between air traffic control and an airline pilot were interfered with. Similarly, internal chaos in the form of malfunctioning organs and tissues is the result of the communication “breakdown” between the brain and body. The goal of chiropractic is to re-establish this communication system, thus revitalizing the body.
